Chords are the foundation of your guitar success. 

Because without good chord knowledge and chord technique, it simply isn't possible to become a competent guitarist.
Having good chord knowledge and technique matters at all ability-levels
For beginners it allows you to make music quickly and it reduces frustration.

The bottom line is, if you have strong chord knowledge and chord technique you’ll be a fantastic guitarist who sounds very musical.


But there's a problem...
90% of all our new students come to us with poor chord technique. 

In fact, it’s mostly terrible. 

It’s not their fault of course… They learned as best they could. (Mostly from trying to teach themselves and/or by watching YouTube videos.) 

They don’t see anything wrong with ‘having a go’ by themselves. What’s the worst that could happen, right? 

And THIS is why so many people struggle to learn guitar.

Every time you play the guitar you are building muscle memory, literally TEACHING your brain and fingers patterns of movement and engraining them more and more deeply.


If you play chords badly for long enough you ENGRAIN the poor technique!  
So having good chord knowledge and solid chord technique isn’t just important, it's also deceptively urgent.

Put simply: If you have sub-standard chord technique you need to fix it quickly because the longer you play with poor technique you ENGRAIN those bad habits into your playing.

This means you can become a flat-out 'bad guitarist' and it becomes much harder to correct those mistakes in your playing in the future.
The circle of frustration

This process can be a vicious circle for some people and it can be incredibly disheartening to have a dream of playing the guitar and watch it slide out of view because you feel you’re just ‘not talented enough.’ 

When people feel this way, they become resigned to it and often feel that guitar 'just isn't for them' and they let the dream die.

When I see this happen, it breaks my heart, because my mission is to spread the gift of music far and wide (because I believe that music is a wholly positive force in the world). 

Music brings people together. It’s a unifying force. It’s magic. It can create joy, energy and help with focus or inspiration. And it can help with relaxation or bring comfort. 

Nothing on Earth affects human beings quite like music. 

But perhaps best of all, it’s an incredible way to express yourself.
